Duminică, 14 iulie 2013, a fost cea mai neagră zi pentru sprintul mondial, mai multe nume de renume fiind anunțate ca fiind dopate: americanul Tyson Gay (lider mondial la 100 m și a doua performanță a anului la 200 m) și jamaicanii: Asafa Powell, Nesta Carter, Sherone Simpson, care se alătură Veronicăi Campbell-Brown, depistată cu diuretic interzis luna trecută. De la jamaicani a fost depistată pozitiv și deținătoarea recordului național la disc, Allison Randall, și un junior. În plus, antrenorul canadian al lui Powell, Carter și Simpson a fost arestat și interogat în Italia, el fiind cel care le-a furnizat un supliment alimentar care conținea oxilofrină (o amfetamină similară efedrinei).

Gay le-a declarat unor ziariști: „I don’t have a sabotage story. I don’t have lies… I basically put my trust in someone and I was let down. It has been tough for me. I have always been a drug-free athlete. I made a mistake. I am not allowed to talk about those things right now. I know exactly what went on, but I can’t discuss it right now. I hope I am able to run again. But I will take whatever punishment I get like a man."

Powell și-a exprimat gândurile în contul Twitter: „I want to be clear in saying to my family, friends, and most of all my fans worldwide that I have never knowingly or willfully taken any supplements or substances that break any rules. My attitude towards doping regulations and testing is well-known and I willingly give samples whenever requested. This result has left me completely devastated in many respects.

Personally, however, this result comes at a greater cost. I write this statement knowing fully that my family, friends, fans and country will be disappointed at this latest development. I am reeling from this genuinely surprising result. I am confident, however, that I will come out stronger and wiser and better prepared to deal with the many twists and turns of being a professional athlete.

I accept the consequences that come with this finding — after all there is only one Asafa Powell.”

De asemenea, a menționat că se face o anchetă internă de către club pentru a se afla cum a fost posibil așa ceva.
